Three Icon Awards announced ahead of tonight’s iHeartRadio Podcast Awards. | Daily News Podcast

The 2022 iHeartRadio Podcast Awards will be presented tonight, but the Icon Awards winners were announced ahead of the virtual ceremonies. The Icon Awards are given to creators, organizations and podcasters who have made groundbreaking contributions to the growing role of podcasting in popular culture today.

This year’s Icon Awards go to Exactly Right Media’s My Favorite Murder, which will be honored with the 2022 Audible Audio Pioneer Award. The comedy/true crime podcast hosted by Karen Kilgariff and Georgia Hardstark, who tell each other their favorite murder stories and hear hometown crime stories from friends and fans. Exactly Right Media just signed a $100 million deal to give Amazon Music and Wondery an exclusive one-week window on My Favorite Murder and its other podcasts.

Another Icon Award leans in the direction of technology. Descript will be honored with the 2022 Innovator Award. The Montreal-based company makes software designed to help podcasters create music videos to promote their shows on social media.

The third Icon Award goes to Force Multiplier, which will receive the Social Impact Award. The podcast hosted by Baratunde Thurston in association with Salesforce, launched in August. It focuses on organizations committed to social impact, finding new ways to combine their strengths, use the power of technology to scale, and multiply their positive impact. Thurston, a writer and activist, is also the creator of the How to Citizen podcast.

Tonight’s iHeartRadio Podcast Awards – which were originally scheduled to be broadcast live from the iHeartRadio Theater in Los Angeles – will instead be produced virtually. The livestream begins at 9 p.m. ET exclusively on the iHeartRadio YouTube channel and Facebook page. It will also air on select iHeartMedia radio stations nationwide at 9 p.m. local time.

The biggest prize – the Podcast of the Year award – was again decided by a social vote on Twitter. The ten nominees for this year’s Podcast of the Year include Code Switch, Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend, Crime Junkie, Louder Than A Riot, Office Ladies, SmartLess, Stuff You Should Know, The Daily, The Midnight Miracle and You’re Wrong On.

Shows will be honored in a variety of genres, including entertainment, comedy, crime, news, sports, food, business and more. There will also be two new award categories in 2022 – Podcasts to Watch and Best International Podcast. Here is the list of 2022 nominees –
