Although prohibited in some states, life in prison without the possibility of parole is still allowed in much of the United States a 2012 decision by the United States Supreme Court’s decision has led to the reopening of thousands of cases of juvenile lifers.

David Luis “Suave” Gonzalez was one of those people whose case was opened. He was finally released from prison in 2017, having been locked up in 1988 for a crime he committed when he was 17.

Futuro Media created a podcast about Gonzalez’s life, titled “Sweet‘, which recently won a Pulitzer Prize.

Maria Hinojosa is the host and executive producer of the award-winning Peabody Award show Latino USA and co-host of “In The Thick”, Futuro Media’s award-winning political podcast. She is also president and founder of Futuro Media.

Hinojosa says that once people are released from prison on parole, they are still subject to a variety of rules and regulations that prevent them from living a free life.

“Suave and I were just talking about this – he’s on parole for life,” Hinojosa says. “He has to pay parole every month, he has to check in with parole, he has to let them know where he is traveling if he leaves the state. There are all kinds of limitations on him and on his life.

Latino USA plays on WDET Wednesdays from 10-11 p.m. and Saturdays from 7-8 p.m.
