There was a small drop in downloads last week among shows measured by Podtrac. The company says downloads were down 1% from the previous week. However, the long-term story remains firmly one of growth, with downloads up 51% year-over-year for the corresponding week.

The Health & Fitness category posted the strongest week-over-week growth, with downloads in this genre increasing 11%. It was also the biggest year-over-year gainer with a 154% increase in downloads compared to the same week in 2021.

Podtrac says other categories that also saw week-over-week growth were history (+7%), science (+7%) and arts (+5%). Declines were seen among sports (-6%), comedy (-5%), business (-2%) and news (-1%). The Society & Culture and True Crime genres were both stable week over week.

Podtrac reported earlier that iHeartRadio remains the top publisher among those it measures in March with more than 443 million downloads and streams. It was followed by NPR, Wondery, New York Times and NBC News. March was a strong month for podcasting, as Podtrac reported among the top 20 publishers, it measures downloads up 13% from February, with year-over-year download numbers which jumped 50% from a year ago.

Overall, Podtrac reported that the average publisher saw a 3% month-over-month increase in monthly unique viewership in the US in March. And year-over-year, March 2022 unique reach for the top 20 publishers was up 22% from March 2021.
